Featuring the D90s 12.3MP sensor, HD video capabilities and a new swiveling 2.7" LCD screen, the D5000 is built on a smaller frame. Designed to sit between the D90 and D60 in the Nikon lineup, the D5000 will cost $850 with a 8-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens or $730 for the body only. ... PROS: (1) 720p video recording at 24fps (2) 2.7-inch articulating LCD (3) same sensor as the D90 (4) same auto-focus system as the D90 (5) Quiet Release Mode - new mode reduces the noise made by the shutter ... Review : The Nikon D5000 is the latest digital SLR camera to incorporate a video recording mode, capable of producing 720p, 1280x720 pixel movies at 30fps complete with sound. The 12.3 megapixel D5000 also features a vari-angle LCD screen, making unusual picture compostions easier than with a fixed screen. Review : There's a lot to like about the Nikon D5000. It takes the great image quality of the D90, not to mention its HD movie mode and AF system, repackages it into a D60-styled body with beginner-friendly controls, and completes it with a fully-articulated screen on the back. It's a compelling combination of features and pitched just right for beginners who'll want guidance and a camera that grows with them.It's not all good news of course: the D5000 is relatively large and heavy for an entry-level model, the movie mode (like all DSLRs with the facility) has a number of operational caveats and the screen's hinge position reduces flexibility when mounted on a tripod. It offers nearly all of the features and performance of the fantastic D90, but in a smaller form factor. Nikon also threw in a flip-down, rotating LCD display to keep things interesting. The D5000 has the usual set of D-SLR features, very good photo quality and performance, plus an HD movie mode. Most of its downsides fall into the "I would've been nice" category: the LCD resolution is low, the viewfinder is on the small side, and autofocus isn't supported on all Nikkor lenses. A few other issues are more annoying, such as the extremely slow contrast detect AF in live view mode. Despite its flaws, the D5000 is a solid choice for those looking for a full-featured, yet approachable D-SLR.
