The Kodak ESP 5250 is one of two all-in-one color printers (ESP 3250, ESP 5250) released in mid 2009. Both printers utilize Kodak’s Kodacolor technology, which reduces ink costs by up to $110 a year. The ESP 5250 adds along 802.11b/g wireless connectivity and a larger 2.5” LCD screen, while maintaining its predecessor’s 5-in-1 card reader. Like its predecessor, the printer handles black/white printing (up to 30ppm), copying (30ppm), and scanning (1200dpi). And it fits either 100 standard sheets of paper or 20 photo sheets between 4x6” to 8.5x14”. Additional features include a USB 2.0 interface, lower power consumption, and manual two-sided printing. Black cartridges retail for $9.99 and color cartridges for $14.99. THE GOOD: Improved photo quality and speed over previous model; 2.4-inch LCD screen; easy to use Home Center software. THE BAD: Fickle paper input tray; expensive; lacks auto-document feeder, USB port and scanner hinge. THE BOTTOM LINE: Kodaks ESP 5250 multifunction printer isnt marred by the errors of its predecessors, but it still needs improvement before it can keep up with the competition. Right now, its pleasing photo quality and satisfactory output speed dont justify the $170 price tag and lack of features.
