Sony Alpha SLT-A55 | Body Only

Review : The Sony Alpha SLT-A55 (sibling to the Sony Alpha SLT-A33) is not technically a DSLR camera, however, its Single Lens Translucent (SLT) technology puts it into the same class of cameras. It has a full-time fast phase-detection AF which works in still image mode and movie shooting mode. It is built around a 16.2MP sensor that supports full HD video recording and ISO sensitivity up to 12,800. A notable feature of this camera is its integrated GPS sensor for location-tagging of still images. The Alpha SLT-A55 boasts two major improvements over the Alpha SLT-A33, namely: a 16.2 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor (the SLT-A33 sports a 14.2 megapixel sensor) and the ability to shoot at 10 frames per second (the SLT-A33 shoots at 7 frames per second). Otherwise, the two cameras sport the same features, including Sonys Translucent Mirror Technology and Anti-Dust technology. The Alpha SLT-A55s 16.2 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor allows it to capture ... PROS: (1) quick phase-detect AF (no slow contrast-based AF) (2) full HD video recording (AVCHD 1080i) with autofocus, stereo audio (3) integrated GPS receiver for location-tagging of photos (4) up to 10fps shooting at full-res with precise AF tracking (5) tilting and swiveling " dsiplay ... CONS: (1) electronic viewfinder: uses more energy and turns off when camera is off, unlike optical viewfinder (drawback of single lens translucent technology) (2) poor battery life - less than 300 shots per charge (3) AVCHD format for video is not very common (4) autofocus is too loud for use in video mode without an external microphone (5) video is soft and interlaced, not up to the standards one might expect

Sony A55 Review

Review : The Sony A55 is a new kind of interchangeable lens camera, removing the optical viewfinder and moving mirror of a DSLR and replacing them with an electronic viewfinder and a fixed semi-translucent mirror. This combination allows the A55 to be smaller, lighter, faster and offer a better Live View experience than a comparably priced DSLR. Sony SLT-A55V (body only)

by cnet.com Monday, January 01, 0001
Review : THE GOOD: Fast, especially for burst shooting; articulating display; relatively straightforward, streamlined interface; really nice virtual-level implementation. THE BAD: Poor battery life; limited manual video-capture controls. THE BOTTOM LINE: Expensive and probably a bit large for the typical point-and-shoot upgrader, the Sony Alpha SLT-A55V nevertheless delivers the performance and photo quality boost those shooters are expecting.

DCRP Review: Sony Alpha SLT-A55

by DCResource Monday, January 01, 0001
Review : The Sony Alpha SLT-A55 uses a radically different translucent mirror design allows for super-fast autofocus in live view (and in movie mode) and a continuous shooting mode whose speeds are normally reserved for cameras costing thousands more. Add in very good photo quality, sensor-shift image stabilization, a rotating LCD, Full HD video recording, and a built-in GPS, and you've got a camera that's anything but "just another Sony D-SLR". The A55 does have some issues: it tends to overexpose, the movie mode could be better, photos and movies can't be played back simultaneously, and the camera's widescreen LCD isn't terribly useful when you're taking 3:2 photos.
