A follow-up to the now discontinued NEX-3, the NEX-C3 features the same format APS-C image sensor as its predecessor, providing a resolution of 16.2 megapixels in its ultra compact form, and is also capable of capturing up to 720p HD video. The larger sensor also allows for professional quality background defocusing effects to be applied to stills or video. Intended to fill the gap between standard point and shoot cameras and DSLRs, the NEX-C3 features preset effects and a new Photo Creativity interface to provide professional quality images without having to spend a long time studying a manual. THE GOOD: Compact and attractive, with a tilting LCD and excellent photo quality, the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 has some compelling aspects. THE BAD: With the 18-55mm lens the camera becomes substantially less compact, theres no EVF option, and the video capabilities are more limited than Id expect for the price. THE BOTTOM LINE: A lot of people will like the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 for its excellent photo quality and a now more usable design, but it can get unexpectedly heavy with the zoom E-mount lenses and its still a bit more expensive than many point-and-shoot upgraders will like.

Sony revamped their consumer compact system camera for 2011, producing a quite competent, attractive digital camera, the NEX-C3. Its body is well constructed, small, and light, but still has a good grip. With 16.2 megapixels and a 3-inch 921K display, the Sony NEX-C3 is designed to capture an image comparable to an SLR in significantly less space, and it does so admirably. Shipping with either an 18-55mm zoom or 16mm prime kit lens, the NEX-C3 also works with three other available e-mount lenses and a host of adapters, making the camera quite versatile.
