Canon PowerShot SX230 HS review at Camera Labs

Review :
The PowerShot SX230 HS is Canon's flagship pocket super-zoom camera. It sports a 14x optical zoom, Full HD 1080p movie recording, a widescreen display, and built-in GPS receiver to tag your photos with your exact position. Perhaps most interestingly of all though is the resolution which Canon has kept at a sensible 12 Megapixels when its rivals are pushing 14 and 16 Megapixels. Does this give the competition an advantage in detail or Canon an edge on noise levels? Find out in our Canon PowerShot SX230 HS review, where we'll compare its performance and features against the Panasonic Lumix TZ20 / ZS10 and Sony Cyber-shot HX9V.

If you are looking for the most compact pocket zooms with GPS, then the SX230 HS is a good choice, and the use of a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor means noise is very low.

DCRP Review: Canon PowerShot SX230 HS
by DCResource Monday, January 01, 0001
Review :
While not the fastest cameras in its class, the PowerShot SX230 HS offers the best photo quality, plus solid build quality, full manual controls, and a 1080p24 movie mode. Downsides include highlight clipping, corner blurring, redeye, and below average battery life.

Review :
The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a GPS-enabled compact digital camera announced in February 2010. It features a GPS chip that can tag a photo with latitude, longitude, and altitude data, and then later direct a user back to that exact same spot. Featured on the SX230 HS camera is a 12.1MP CMOS sensor, a 14x optical zoom lens, and a 3.0” display with limited touch functionality. Like the ELPH series models that were released around the same time, the Canon SX230 HS supports full 1080p high-definition video capture with audio. Additional features include high-speed burst shooting, slow-motion playback, and digital image stabilization. Features 12.1MP CMOS Sensor 24mm Wide-Angle Lens 14X Optical Zoom 4X Digital Zoom 3.0" Touchscreen Display TTL Autofocus White Balance Control Built-In Flash HD JPEG Images 1080p MOV Videos Integrated GPS GeoTagging High Speed Shooting Slow Motion Recording 3200 ISO Battery Pack Stereo Audio Out Monaural Video Out ... PROS: (1) sharp 14x zoom lens 28-392mm (35mm equiv.), little distortion (2) 12MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor - much improved low light performance over previous generation designs (3) built-in GPS for geotagging your photos - a first for the PowerShot line (4) 3" display with a decent resolution (460K dot) (5) records to easy to find, affordable and capacious SD/SDHC/SDXC flash storage (Eye-fi compatible) ... CONS: (1) lens is relatively slow (due to being so long) - F/3.1-5.9, poorer in low light situations, not as capable of isolating subjects from backgrounds/foregrounds with DOF (2) boring bulky aesthetic - unchanged from the previous generation (3) short battery life

Review :
THE GOOD: The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS has good low-light photo quality for its class; excellent color; shooting options that encourage experimentation; and great-looking video quality. THE BAD: Its shooting performance, though good, lags behind the competition as does its GPS functionality. The battery life is short and the overall design could use some help, too. THE BOTTOM LINE: If you want a compact megazoom with manual controls, GPS, and excellent photo quality, the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a good place to start.
Canon PowerShot SX230 HS Review

Review :
Canon takes a quality pocket long zoom and adds both a GPS radio and Full HD video for a more complete package. The resulting Canon PowerShot SX230 delivers good image quality and pretty nice video quality as well, while maintaining that impressive 14x, 28-392mm zoom lens. We found some minor trouble with chromatic aberration, unsurprising at this focal length, but otherwise enjoyed the Canon SX230, indoors and out. It'll make an excellent travel camera, thanks to the wide and long zoom, as well as the GPS to match your photos to a map, and it offers as much automation or manual control as you could want. Read our review of the Canon SX230 HS for all the details.
