The HDR-XR160 Handycam is a camcorder released by Sony as part of its HD lineup, promising high-definition home videos thanks in part to an "Exmor R" CMOS sensor, a large-capacity hard drive memory, and extensive zoom capabilities. The "Exmor R" CMOS sensor of the HDR-XR160 Handycam works more sensitively than other sensors, enabling it to capture clear video in poor lighting conditions. The 1920 x 1080 high definition footage is recorded to a massive 160GB hard drive built right into the camcorder, eliminating the need for buying and packing multiple SD cards, and offering the capacity to store up to 66 hours of footage at once. The HDR-XR160 also includes a 30x optical zoom and 42x extended zoom, as well as Wind Noise Reduction, a microphone jack, and a 5.1ch microphone and stereo speaker. CONS: (1) Bottom-mounted battery release is not conducive to tripod shooting - compartment is completely inaccessible when used with a stand adapter (2) Standard and HD-quality video tends to appear rather bright when played back on a computer or television - may require a considerable amount of contrast adjustment for optimal viewing (3) Auto-focus performs relatively slow as compared to other models from Toshiba and Panasonic - up to 1.5x slower in some circumstances (4) Auto Gain function can only be applied in playback mode - may be frustrating for users with a very specific application in mind
