Overall, the Canon Rebel XS is a good quality digital SLR camera, well-suited to the consumer photographer. Canon sought to compete with Nikon and Pentax at the extreme low price level, and they had to cut a few corners. The body isn't quite as nice as the Canon Rebel XSi, and the image quality suffers from a few more hitches, worst of which are the moiré patterns we find in fine detail and the chroma noise we find especially in red hair. Most consumers won't notice, however, unless they zoom to 100 percent onscreen and search around like we do. The Canon Rebel XS's image stabilized lens and impressive high ISO performance should mitigate most of the other problems, and the Rebel XS's fast autofocus should make this year's holiday pictures better than ever. While we really like the Canon Rebel XS for consumer photographers, we think most enthusiast shooters will be better served with the Canon Rebel XSi kit, which is available for about $200 more.

The Canon EOS Rebel XS (also known as the EOS-1000D) is a very competent entry-level digital SLR. It takes photos of excellent quality, it's responsive, and it offers a host of useful features. It's biggest problem is that its big brother, the Rebel XSi, costs just $70 more. Upgrading to the XSi doesn't buy you better photo quality (you just get large images), but it does get you a larger LCD and viewfinder, faster continuous shooting speeds (especially in RAW mode), spot metering, and more. On it's own, the Rebel XS is a great entry-level camera, easily earning my recommendation. At the same time, it's hard to resist the Rebel XSi for just a little more money.

The EOS Rebel XS is Canon's newest entry-level SLR. Based on the Rebel XSi, it's marginally cheaper and less powerful, with a resolution of 10 megapixels versus 12 for the XSi, a smaller 2.5" LCD screen. It arrives into an already crowded marketplace, full of affordable, starter SLRs. The XS performed competently in most of our tests, and proved itself able to handle low light situations well, and boasting an impressive dynamic range. For an entry-level SLR, it would easily handle nighttime and indoor shooting well. At the same time it's only barely cheaper than the Rebel XSi, and is more expensive than two of its major competitors, the Sony Alpha 200 and the Nikon D60. The former generally scored worse than the XS, but is significantly cheaper, and the latter offers roughly similar performance for a slightly lower price tag. The XS has a list price of $699 including an EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS Lens.

Canon's Rebel XS is the company's latest entry-level DSLR and the successor to the best-selling Rebel XTi. The new XS shares the same 10 Megapixel CMOS sensor as its predecessor and also the same-sized 2.5in screen, but now adds Live View and comes bundled with an Image Stabilised kit lens, albeit with the same 18-55mm focal length as before. Interestingly some specifications have actually been downgraded a little: the AF system now has 7-points to the XTi's 9-points, and the 3fps continuous shooting rate now only applies to JPEG files. But the core specification of 10 Megapixels, Live View and a lens with anti-shake at an affordable price will greatly appeal to anyone in the market for a budget DSLR.
