Review : Announced on September 16th 2008, the EOS 5D Mark II is Canons successor to the EOS 5D, the worlds first compact full frame digital SLR. The EOS 5D Mark II boasts a new 21MP CMOS sensor, an expanded ISO range of 50-25,600 and a wealth of improvements and new features including full 1080p HD movie recording, live view, 3.0" 920k dot LCD, DIGIC IV processor, increased battery capacity and sensor dust reduction. A January 2009 firmware update (1.0.7) fixes a problem with vertical banding noise when recording in sRAW1 as well as the "black dot" phenomenon noticed soon after the camera was released to the public. ... PROS: (1) 21MP CMOS sensor (2) 1080p HD movie recording (3) Wide range ISO setting (100-6400) (4) Live View - 3." 920k dot LCD (5) Increased Battery Capacity ... CONS: (1) 1080p30 is nice, but 1080p60 would be better (2) HD Video capture up to 4GB per clip (3) expensive (4) 1080p video focussing only by pressing AF-ON button - resulting in chronically unfocused movies (5) no popup flash (for quick surprise shots)

DCRP Review: Canon EOS-5D Mark II

by DCResource Monday, January 01, 0001
Review : The Canon EOS-5D Mark II is a solid upgrade to its predecessor, and a great choice for Canon users looking to step up to a full-frame body. The Mark II has a whopping 21.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor (which isn't without a few issues), great build quality, full manual controls, HD movie recording, and more accessories than you could possibly afford. There aren't a lot of negatives, but they're all important ones. Images straight out of the camera are quite soft, though your choice of lens has at least some role in that. You'll also find some detail smudging from noise reduction at low ISOs in some photos, proving that compact cameras aren't the only one with this problem. While the Mark II's HD movie mode is very cool, the lack of continuous autofocus makes recording a challenge. Finally, the 5D lags behind its two main competitors -- the Nikon D700 and Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 -- in terms of battery life and continuous shooting performance. Despite those issues, the 5D Mark II is still a heck of a camera, and one that is easy to recommend.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Review

by Imaging Resource Monday, January 01, 0001
Review : Canon has been adding something special to each of their new digital SLRs, something that sets the camera apart from the pack. This time, the something special is the HD movie mode in the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Capable of capturing 1080p movies, the new camera opens up a whole world of video opportunities for those with a selection of Canon full-frame lenses -- from capturing extreme wide angles to isolating subjects with long telephoto, the 5D Mark II is truly a video artist's tool. Of course, the 5D Mark II also has the goods for the more traditional still photographer, offering a 21.1-megapixel sensor, a tuned version of the sensor in the Canon 1Ds Mark III. Now the 5D Mark II's sensor has significantly better high ISO performance, able to produce nearly noise-free images up to ISO 6,400. If you can handle a little noise, you can even reach out to 25,600. The Canon EOS 5D Mark II's new high resolution LCD delivers a fine 640x480 image for better focus checking and a great image in Live View mode. The whole package comes in below the price of competing full-frame digital SLRs, at $2,699. Click below to read our full review of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

Camera Labs - Canon EOS 5D Mark II review

by cameralabs.com Monday, January 01, 0001
Review : Canon's EOS 5D Mark II is a powerful and feature-packed DSLR that represents a significant upgrade over the original 5D, and a tough rival in the growing 'affordable' full-frame market. The new Mark II may share essentially the same body and AF system as its predecessor, but almost everything else has been upgraded. The 21.1 Megapixel sensor is capable of recording a huge amount of detail given a decent lens, and the 3in VGA screen is a big improvement over its predecessor. The new movie mode is also very impressive, although a number of caveats mean it's unsuitable as a replacement for a normal camcorder and casual filming technique. Normal photos are not without faults too, including the now infamous black dot issue which could be a problem if you shoot at night. In our full review of the EOS 5D Mark II at Cameralabs, we've tested all the new features, explained how to make the most of the movie mode, and provided comparisons against its two main rivals, the Sony A900 and Nikon D700. We also have examples of the black dot problem and who it'll affect, so to find out if this is the right full-frame DSLR for you, check out our review.
