The Canon EOS-5D Mark II is a solid upgrade to its predecessor, and a great choice for Canon users looking to step up to a full-frame body. The Mark II has a whopping 21.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor (which isn't without a few issues), great build quality, full manual controls, HD movie recording, and more accessories than you could possibly afford. There aren't a lot of negatives, but they're all important ones. Images straight out of the camera are quite soft, though your choice of lens has at least some role in that. You'll also find some detail smudging from noise reduction at low ISOs in some photos, proving that compact cameras aren't the only one with this problem. While the Mark II's HD movie mode is very cool, the lack of continuous autofocus makes recording a challenge. Finally, the 5D lags behind its two main competitors -- the Nikon D700 and Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 -- in terms of battery life and continuous shooting performance. Despite those issues, the 5D Mark II is still a heck of a camera, and one that is easy to recommend.

When Canon introduced the EOS 5D in August 2005 it was one of only two full-frame digital SLRs available (along with Canon's own 1D Mark II). Three years later, though, Nikon and Sony both offer attractive full-frame alternatives that leave the 12.8-megapixel 5D looking a bit antique. Now Canon strikes back with the EOS 5D Mark II, ramping up resolution to 21.1 megapixels, jumping two processor generations ahead of its full-frame forefather and blazing a new trail as the first digital SLR to offer full 1080p video shooting. The 5D Mark II lists for $2699 for the body alone, or $3499 with the 24-105mm f/4L IS USM image-stabilized lens shown here. Overall we were much impressed with the 5D Mark II, which scored exceptionally well in our color and dynamic range testing, and produced excellent video quality. Less experienced photographers will be put off by the depth of controls and lack of training wheels (and we admit to wishing a pop-up flash was built in), but sophisticated users will prize the level of customizability and control offered by the 5D Mark II.

Capable of capturing 1080p movies, the new camera opens up a whole world of video opportunities for those with a selection of Canon full-frame lenses -- from capturing extreme wide angles to isolating subjects with long telephoto, the 5D Mark II is truly a video artist's tool. Canon's EOS 5D Mark II is a powerful and feature-packed DSLR that represents a significant upgrade over the original 5D, and a tough rival in the growing 'affordable' full-frame market. The new Mark II may share essentially the same body and AF system as its predecessor, but almost everything else has been upgraded. The 21.1 Megapixel sensor is capable of recording a huge amount of detail given a decent lens, and the 3in VGA screen is a big improvement over its predecessor. The new movie mode is also very impressive, although a number of caveats mean it's unsuitable as a replacement for a normal camcorder and casual filming technique. Normal photos are not without faults too, including the now infamous black dot issue which could be a problem if you shoot at night.
