Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM

by productwiki.com Monday, January 01, 0001
Review : The Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM is an extremely wide range lens that serves an optimal solution for consumers who require a wide range of focal lengths to work with. The super long focal length zoom range makes it useful for a variety of uses, including portraits, sports, landscape, etc. Critics have noted that the unit is quite heavy, though. They also noticed that it’s a push/pull zoom, which they say makes it difficult to keep the lens stable. On the bright side, these lenses supposedly have a good zoom tension, not to mention Image Stabilization, tripod sensors, and a wide-open aperture. Additional features include an ultrasonic motor AF system for fast/quiet focusing, and a 77mm filter size. Features Wide-Range Lenses All Focal Lengths in One Lens Heavy / Burdensome Push/Pull Zoom Thorough Tension Image Stabilization Tripod Sensors Wide-Open Aperture Fast/Quiet Focusing NOT COMPATIBLE w/EF 1.4x Extender NOT COMPATIBLE w/EF ... PROS: (1) great do-it-all lens - massive focal zoom range covers most standard focal lengths, saves potentially vital time, very convenient (2) tripod sensing image stabilization for up to 3 stops of improvement on or off a tripod - intelligently changes image stabilization method to match use, essential on a slower lens such as this (3) good optical quality considering the large focal/zoom range (4) L class - Canons highest level lenses, best build quality and optical performance available for the money (5) non-rotating front element ... CONS: (1) large and heavy - 3.7 lbs (2) variable aperture (F/3.5-5.6) cannot compete with professional fixed primes or smaller range zooms - poorer in low light situations, cannot isolate subjects with DOF as well (3) optical quality is weak compared to smaller zoom range lenses and primes, as is expected for a super-zoom (4) strong distortion at almost all lengths (5) apparent light falloff (vignetting) and softness in corners at varying focal lengths on full frame
